How to Verify a Connecticut PE License
Open the official lookup
Go to the Connecticut eLicense portal at elicense.ct.gov — the only official license verification site for Connecticut. Third-party sites may be outdated.
Search by name or license number
Enter the engineer's full name or license number. Select the profession category for Professional Engineer if the portal offers a filter.
Review status, expiration & discipline
Confirm the license shows an active status, a future expiration date, the Professional Engineer license type, and no disciplinary actions on file.
Who Licenses Engineers in Connecticut
Professional Engineer (PE) licenses in Connecticut are issued by the Connecticut State Board of Examiners of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, administered through the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. Only a licensed PE may practice or offer professional engineering services in Connecticut, and building departments require a PE's seal on structural plans submitted for a permit.
When hiring an engineering firm rather than an individual, also check the firm's Certificate of Authorization — the firm-level registration required for corporations and LLCs practicing engineering in Connecticut under Connecticut General Statutes §20-306a. Individual PE licenses and firm Certificates of Authorization are verified as separate records in the same eLicense portal.
Why This Matters for Your Project
Stamped plans require a PE
Connecticut building departments only accept structural plans sealed by a currently licensed Professional Engineer. An expired or revoked license means your permit submission will be rejected.
Protect yourself before you pay
Verifying a license takes two minutes and protects you from unlicensed practice — especially important for structural repairs, foundation work, and load-bearing modifications.
